Face Lift

Face Lift or Rhytidoplasty smooths loose skin, tightens underlying tissues and removes excess fat.

It is one of the most commonly requested procedures by both men and women. It is performed to the skin that has lost its natural elasticity – usually around the eyes, mouth and jaw line.

The facelift is one of the most effective and safe ways to rejuvenate your face. Rhytidectomy can create a younger appearance and improve your self-confidence.

By removing excess skin, the procedure can result in significant wrinkle reduction and a tighter appearance, whilst maintaining the normal facial expression.

The effects of the sun and the environment can also be diminished through a Face Lift surgery.

Results can last for up to ten years. This procedure is often combined with other non-surgical treatments such as Anti-Wrinkle and Fillers.

Methodology

The Standard, The Mid and The Mini

There are three main surgery approaches – the Standard facelift, used to improve the entire face, the Mid facelift, and the Mini, designed to target specific area of concern.

The Standard (Traditional) Face Lift

A traditional facelift incision often begins in the hairline at the temples, continues around the ear and ends in the lower scalp. Fat may be sculpted or redistributed from the face, jowls and neck. Underlying tissue is repositioned, often the deeper layers of the face and the muscles are also lifted. Skin is then re-draped over the uplifted contours and excess skin is trimmed away. A second incision under the chin may be necessary to further improve an ageing neck. Sutures or skin adhesives close the incisions.

The Mid Face Lift

The mid face-lift is suggested to people where the area between the cheeks has flattened, but there isn’t a significant jowling or sagging of the neck. To achieve a younger appearance the surgeon makes several small incisions along the hairline and inside the mouth to reposition the fatty tissue layers. This improves the nose-to-mouth lines and the roundness over the cheekbones.

With this type of face lift, there are practically no scars and the recovery time is minimised. The procedure is often combined with a blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

The Mini (Keyhole) Face Lift

During this procedure, a several very small incisions are made into the skin on your face. The surgeon then feeds in an endoscope beneath the skin, allowing him to observe exactly which muscles need tightening and how much excess fat needs to be removed, if any.

The Mini Face Lift is a more temporary solution to the ageing of the face which also has less downtime and is done on people who have deep nasolabial folds, sagging facial structures, yet still have a firm and well-contoured neck. It is commonly used for brow lifts and upper face lifts. This type of surgery, however is not recommended to everyone. Dr. Joffily will be able to advise if the method is suitable for you during your consultation.

Aftercare

What to expect after a Rhytidoplasty and associated risks

The operation is usually performed under general anaesthetic or sedation. Most patients will need to stay in hospital for one night. This is necessary to fully observe the first 12 hours and avoid any complications.

Once the surgery is complete, your face will be wrapped in bandages to prevent infection and support your skin. These will be removed before you leave the hospital. Drains might be places behind the ears to allow excess blood and fluids to drain from the area.

It may take several months for swelling to fully dissipate and up to 6 months for incision lines to mature.

Although Face Lift surgery is one of the safest plastic procedures, there are potential risks associated. These will be discussed with the surgeon during your initial consultation. Some of the common complication include reaction to the anaesthesia, bleeding, numbness, injury to the nerves and infection. You will be prescribed antibiotics after the surgery to prevent any potential complications.

Life-long sun protection will help to maintain your rejuvenated appearance by minimising photo-ageing (sun damage). In addition, a healthy lifestyle will also help extend the results of your rejuvenated, more youthful appearance.
